First reported as a key bowler in the Maddington A grade premiership team of 1954/55. Rod took 7 wickets in the 2nd innings when Cannington were routed for 76. It was reported in the local newspaper that “Credit must go to Portsmouth who was the wrecker”.

Rod (“Portsy”) returned to Maddington in 1967/68 and although the complete records are not available, he participated in a further 67 matches scoring 1746 runs at an average of 28.62 and a high score of 85 vs Thornlie in 1967/68. He took 221 wickets at an average of 13.88 including 5 wkts in an innings 15 times and 10 wkts in a match twice. His best bowling returned 7 wkts for 15 vs Armadale. Rod is a three time premiership player. In the 1974/75 premiership he took 6/40 in the 1st innings and 2/38 in the 2nd innings. In the 1975/76 premiership he took 2/33 and followed up with a dashing 82 runs at 1st drop to set up a premiership win. A further 2/25 in the 2nd innings helped ensure that Maddington took the flag.

Rod played pennant cricket for Subiaco and South Perth Rod was elevated to the WA state squad in 1962. He also represented the South Suburban Cricket Association and captained the WA Cricket Union (combined association side) team that toured Victoria in 1973/74.
